Victoria may be one of Australia鈥檚 smaller states but it packs a huge variety of attractions into its (by Australian standards) compact size. From beach life to sophisticated urban living, there鈥檚 something for everyone here. Victoria is one of Australia鈥檚 most densely populated states, but most of its population lives in the capital, the multicultural, cosmopolitan city of Melbourne.
Regularly voted one of the world鈥檚 most liveable cities, Melbourne is justly famous for its arts scene 鈥 it hosts international comedy, film and arts festivals and is home to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Ballet, among many others. But it鈥檚 not just for culture vultures 鈥 the city is also a haven for sports fans. It鈥檚 the home of the Australian Tennis Open, the Formula One Grand Prix and the Melbourne Cup each year, and its famous MCG stadium is the setting for both cricket and Australian Rules matches. It has a well-deserved reputation for eating out and shopping too! So whether restaurants, sport, art, shopping or nightlife is your thing, Melbourne is definitely worth a visit.
Victoria is about more than just Melbourne, though. Outside the city, the state has beautiful scenery. Make sure you take in the Great Ocean Road, a glorious coastal drive that winds along a pristine coastline and culminates at the sandstone pillars of the Twelve Apostles. Other highlights include a trip to Wilsons Promontory National Park, a forest-covered wilderness with great walks and gorgeous (empty!) beaches, a day visiting the fairy penguins at Phillip Island, and wine-tasting at the vineyards of the Yarra Valley.
